Dashboard Camera Captures Ice Shatter Windshield On I-495

BOSTON (CBS) – A dashboard camera captured the moment a sheet of ice destroyed a car windshield Wednesday morning.

Jeffrey Cote posted the video on YouTube, and said it happened at 8:45 a.m on I-495 south in Haverhill.

"An ice sheet flew off the top of an SUV and destroyed my windshield, bent my wiper arm, and damaged my side mirror," Cote said in the video description. "If I had braked harder, I could have avoided impact, but it initially appeared the piece was going to fall in front of me."

Cote says he was driving a Saab 9-5 Aero Wagon in the left lane when the ice struck his windshield. He says he was covered in glass, but was able to safely pull over to the side of the highway.

After reviewing the dashboard camera video, Cote was unable to see the license plate number belonging to the black SUV in front of him. He told WBZ that the car continued down the highway and the driver may not have been aware of what had occurred.

Now, Cote has a warning for drivers.

"Just a few seconds, just try to slam as much ice as possible off your roof. Because, it could have gone a lot worse, and it could save someone's life if you do a better job cleaning," Cote said.

Drivers can receive a $200 ticket for not clearing the snow off their car.
