BC Basketball Players Mob Senior Walk-On Rewarded With Scholarship

BOSTON (CBS) – Steve Perpiglia's Christmas present came a few days early.

Perpiglia, a walk-on member of the Boston College men's basketball team, was surprised by his coach last week with a scholarship for his final semester.

The senior, who has played sparingly in his four seasons with the Eagles, was given the surprise by head coach Jim Christian in the locker room following Tuesday's 64-55 victory over Fordham.

Addressing his team following the game, Christian announced that Perpiglia will be on scholarship spring semester as he closes out his four year playing career.

"This is a program we're building here," Christian tells the team in a video now viewed over 35,000 times. "This is a program, and people need to be rewarded for everything they do."

Perpiglia's teammates react to the news by mobbing him and hoisting him up in the air.

The celebration continued in the arena as Christian passed the news along to the senior's friends and family who made the trip to Brooklyn for the game.

Boston College is 6-6 on the year and has now won three straight games.
