Soccer Team Helps Dracut Mom Battling Cancer Get In The Christmas Spirit

DRACUT (CBS) - With Christmas closer than a penalty kick, you wouldn't blame a soccer mom like Jill McManus if she dropped her daughter Kassie off at her game for some last minute shopping.

Truth is, for Jill the best gift this year is wrapped in shin pads and a pink cotton t-shirt.

"This is my first time at my daughter's game since I was diagnosed," Jill told WBZ at the Tyngsboro Indoor Sports Complex Wednesday night.

In October, Jill was diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer. About a week ago, she began chemotherapy.

Christmas spirit has been tough to come by. This is where Kassie's soccer team comes in. They call themselves: "Team Jill."

"It means a lot that my team loves my mom and supports my mom," Kassie says.

A few nights ago, support meant Team Jill taking a bus to Jill's home in Dracut. Kassie describes what happened when she opened the door: "I see the bus and one of the parents says 'move that bus.' And all of them are caroling!"

The Under-14 soccer squad did all the hits. Soccer player turned caroler Olivia Parrington thought they were on pitch-- for the most part. "Overall we were pretty good."

Jill loved it. "They were singing this for me and my family-- and that means so much. That's what Christmas is all about."

Now, this story gets a little stocking stuffer. On Wednesday night, Team Jill captured the indoor league championship.

The team victory photo has Jill right there in front... having herself a merry little Christmas.
