Police Officer Touched By Small Holiday Gesture

BOSTON (CBS) -- A small act of giving made a big impression on a Boston Police detail officer Monday, the BPD reported on their blog.

While working on a construction detail on Rossmore Road in Jamaica Plain, the officer moved traffic cones for a resident so she could drive down the street. He said he would move them again for her if he was still there when she returned. She then said she would be back in an hour, and asked if the officer would like a cup of coffee. Though he appreciated it, he politely declined.

Hours later, as the detail finished and the officer was leaving, the resident honked her horn to get his attention and ran to his cruiser to hand him a gift card.

"I know you said you didn't need a coffee but I wanted you to have one anyway," she reportedly said. "Thanks for all you guys do. Have a Merry Christmas!"

"It literally took me a second to process what was going on," the officer said. "You know, as police officers, the large majority of our interactions are negative and confrontational. So, to have an experience like the one I had today absolutely made my day."

The department had a message for the Jamaica Plain woman--"Thank you for thanking us. It means more than you know."
