WESTPORT (CBS) — A Westport family is in anguish after a fire rips through their home late Saturday night claiming the life of 4-year-old Caleb Nordarillo who was found on the second floor.
His mother Melody and her daughter Bella barely escaped.
Investigators say Melody , Bella and Caleb were inside the home when flames broke out.
“He’s such a sweet kid. You never know what’s going to happen and I don’t know how this started,” Caleb’s great grandfather Urban Medeiros said.
Neighbor Bethany says her 17 year old brother Jacob tried to run in save Caleb.
“The smoke was getting him too much and he jumped out of Caleb’s window,” Bethany said.
Family and friends say Melody and her daughter Bella, are in the hospital with severe burns to their bodies.
“Melody was screaming he was still inside and she was burned from head to toe,” Bethany said. A You Caring website was set up Sunday to raise money for the family.
Police say this home is the sight of another fire that claimed the life of 9 members of the Audette family back in 1952.
“It was real tragedy in every paper around the country. It’s hard to believe same thing could happen same time of year,” neighbor Jerry Grondin said.
Now a family getting ready to celebrate Christmas is completely devastated.
“Christmas is this week and he was looking forward to seeing Santa,” Bethany said.
The State Fire Marshalls office is investigating.
