Woman Struck And Killed By Subway Train In Boston

BOSTON (AP/CBS) — A woman has been struck and killed by a subway train in Boston.

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's Transit Police say the incident happened sometime before 6:40 p.m. Wednesday at the Downtown Crossing station.

Police say the unidentified woman, who was about 42 years old, was struck by a northbound train while trespassing on the right of way. She was later pronounced dead of her injuries.

Two responding firefighters were slightly shocked when machinery used to test the third rail for power malfunctioned. They were taken to Tufts Medical as a precaution.

The accident shut down much of the Red Line subway that cuts through the city. Shuttle buses replaced train service between the JFK/UMass stop in South Boston and the Harvard University stop in Cambridge, Mass.

On Tuesday, an unidentified man was seriously hurt when he was struck by a Red Line train at the Broadway station in South Boston, also causing service delays.
