Georgetown Father And Son Bring Legos To Life With Brick Sound Kit

GEORGETOWN (CBS) - Building a better Lego.

A little boy from Georgetown is bringing the classic toy to life with his new invention. He's only 8, but his brainstorm could soon be on the assembly line, and it adds a new dimension to playing with the brick-like toys - sound.

Chase Freedman knows his spaceship sounds. And that's what led to his invention, the Brick Sound Kit. It's a gadget for Legos and other block type creations, and you program the sounds.

"You attach it to a Lego ship and if you want, you can make your own sounds or find them online," Chase told WBZ-TV.

You put those sounds on a tablet or smartphone and connect to the device wirelessly. But the coolest thing is that it's motion activated, so "fly" the ship and the sounds come out. There's a sound for each movement depending on how you program it.

The brainstorm happened one day when Chase and his dad, Chuck, were playing with Legos and making their own sounds.

"He goes, dad, you know what would be great? If we could somehow record the sounds we're making and have them play back when we fly the ship," Chuck said.

A light bulb went on.

"I thought, that's actually a really cool idea," he said.

The two tinkered and came up with a prototype. With the help of tech and design specialists, the idea advanced. But Chase has been involved every step of the way.

"He got to give input on where to put the buttons, where to put the lights, what the shape of the device was," said Chuck.

And now a Kickstarter campaign is underway, and if it succeeds: "The earliest units will start shipping in May," Chuck said.

Chase hopes other kids will get the chance to play.

"They'll probably say I like it, it's awesome, and they'll probably be, like, whoahhhhhhhhh," Chase said. His dad says you should expect to pay about $100 for the device.
