Former figure skater and U.S. National Champion Nancy Kerrigan says the two skated together at the Stoneham Figure Skating Club when they were kids.

"He's still in my heart like a little brother. A true friend (and a) very loyal, caring person and a good listener," she says. "My heart goes out and breaks for them all."

Kerrigan recalls the many early morning practices on the ice and the bond they had growing up.

"He was passionate about everything. Everything done with a great big smile, and he had fun in life," Kerrigan said.

She says Garrett's father called her to share the horrifying news.

"It's so sad. He has two young kids and they run to him when he comes in the door," Kerrigan said.

Ron Kravette also skated and competed against Garrett nationally back in 1995.

"My memory of him was he was friendly, encouraging, and a sportsman," he said.

Both Kravette and Kerrigan say the skating world is a small and tight-knit community. Though it's been awhile since they've all seen each other, they always looked forward to getting together.

"That's the reunion I always wanted, and I've been saying that for the last few weeks. Now it won't happen," Kerrigan said.
