In the early 1990s, Swasey competed at a high level as a figure skater. He moved to Colorado to train.

Former Olympian Nancy Kerrigan, also a Massachusetts native, knew Swasey well.

"My heart goes out and breaks for them all," Kerrigan told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

Melrose Mayor Rob Dolan was a Melrose High School classmate of the fallen police officer.

"I have been inundated with classmates and other people in Melrose today who heard the name," he said. "They're absolutely in shock and disbelief that something could happen as horribly to this young man, particularly for his wife Rachel (and) his two young children, ages 10 and 6, the same as my own...We're speechless."

Melrose Police Chief Michael Lyle says man of his officers also knew Swasey and attended high school with him. Swasey graduated in 1989.

"Not only did you lose a son you lost a Dad here and I see this devastating to anyone," he said.
