Norton Man Dead After Shots Fired At Police In Standoff

NORTON (CBS) -- A man is dead after shots were fired at Norton police in a standoff that began Saturday night, authorities said.

Police were called to a home on Azalea Road at about 10:30 p.m. for a report of a disturbance. The 911 caller said that a man at the home was trying to get into a safe that had a handgun, and he was the only person inside.

"As Norton officers approached the residence, they were fired upon through a first floor window," police said in a statement. "Officers immediately returned fire."

Police then waited for a SWAT unit to arrive. A Massachusetts State Police bomb squad was able to get inside the home, and police determined the man died from an apparent gunshot wound.

Authorities have not yet said if the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, or if the man was struck by an officer's bullet.

The deceased man has been identified by officials as Kevin J. Murray, 48, of Norton.

No one else was hurt during the standoff. The incident is being investigated by the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.
