Harvard Rower Hopes To Change The Way Female Athletes Are Viewed

BOSTON (CBS) - Mercedes Jimenez is a Cambridge baseball pitcher who is on a mission. "I'll make it somewhere and people will learn more about how girls can play baseball," she says. She's tired of being treated differently than the boys.

Naomi Lang knows her frustration. She rows crew at Harvard University and during a class project on athletes, she noticed a troubling trend.

"So I googled female athletes and all the first page was hottest athletes you haven't seen," Lang said.

She realized, when it came to female athletes it was all about their bodies or their looks and rarely their talents.

"I couldn't even find a female athlete judged on her performance and that just got me really frustrated," Lang said.

So, her frustration turned to the "Female Athletes of Boston" Facebook page and blog.

It's all about local females in action, just like you see for the men.

Perry Barber is a Major League Baseball umpire. She says, it's time for society to change. "We just want to join in the fun and reach our full potential," she says.

And lots of others seem to agree, the page which just started on Sunday is lighting up.

"The reaction has been epic," Lang says. "I mean we had 1000 followers in 24 hours!"

She's hoping to change the conversation and the perception, one "like" at a time.

Her Facebook page is called "Female Athletes of Boston." And she welcomes submissions.
