Route 128 North Traffic Jam Caused By Joint Compound Delay

NEEDHAM (CBS) – Rush hour traffic into the city was worse than usual Tuesday morning on Route 128.

Overnight construction work did not wrap up in time, which kept two northbound lanes in the Needham-Dedham area closed as the daily rush began around 6 a.m.

Traffic was backed up for ten miles for more than two hours.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation told WBZ-TV the lanes were shut down so a joint compound applied to a bridge expansion joint over Great Plain Avenue could "properly cure."

The lanes could not be opened until authorities were able to rule that section of road was safe for travel.

"MassDOT understands the frustration drivers have experienced and we apologize for the inconvenience this has caused," the agency said in a statement.
