Mass. Police Step Up Security Following Deadly Paris Attacks

BOSTON (CBS) -- Tonight Boston Police are keeping a close eye at the French Consulate where flowers and messages of support continue to be left following several attacks in Paris Friday that left more than 120 dead.

But that's not all, as local officers and State Police are patrolling many different locations around Massachusetts, including the Statehouse and other key sites.

The question is: What can be done to keep a free society completely safe?

Former Boston Police Commissioner and WBZ Security Analyst Ed Davis says the challenges are huge. He said it's shocking that attacks like the ones in Paris has not happened in the United States.

"This type of attack would be much easier to put together here in the US because of the availability of firearms," he says. "You can't find firearms in France. You have to smuggle them into the country.

"But here in the United States this kind of low-cost, high-impact incident would be much easier to stage."

That's why Davis says it's so crucial for police and everyone to keep a close eye on what's happening around them.

State Police say there is no specific, credible threat to Massachusetts, but the added security will remain in place as long as it's needed.
