Drowsy Driving Study: 2 In 5 Say They've Nodded Off Behind Wheel
WASHINGTON (CBS) -- A new AAA report has some alarming numbers about drowsy driving.
A survey of more than 2,500 drivers over the summer found that 43.2 percent say they've fallen asleep or nodded off behind the wheel at some point. About 10 percent say they've done so within the last year.
People between 19 and 24 years old were the most likely to report a recent instance of falling asleep while driving, according to the study.
AAA says the results are particularly surprising given that 97 percent of drivers say it's unacceptable to drive if they have trouble keeping their eyes open.
About 6,400 fatal crashes a year can be attributed to drowsy driving, AAA says.
