Keller @ Large: The Voters Have Spoken

BOSTON (CBS) - What happened at the polls around here on Tuesday? For starters, a warning to all incumbents - better not get too comfy.

Just ask Fall River Mayor Sam Sutter, elected last December in a recall vote ousting incumbent Will Flanagan, now out himself in a decisive victory for 23-year-old City Councilor Jasiel Correia. (Age was no barrier for Correia or 18-year-old college freshman Jack Lally, who won an open ward Councillor's seat in Brockton.)

And complacency seemed to be at least part of the undoing of the longest-serving member of the Boston City Council, Charles Yancey, defeated handily by Andrea Joy Campbell. It was a good night for female challengers in Boston, as Anissa Essaibi-George beat out incumbent Steve Murphy for one of the four at-large council seats.

But some local incumbents survived quite nicely, despite strong challenges from candidates backed by traditionally-potent municipal unions. Waltham Mayor Jeannette McCarthy survived a pre-election vote of no confidence from both the police and fire unions, and Worcester Mayor Joe Petty also overcame his main challenger's endorsement by the cops.

Incumbent Revere Mayor Dan Rizzo may well seek a recount of his 117-vote loss to challenger Brian Arrigo, but the loss reflects in part discontent over the failure of Rizzo's failed push to bring a casino to Suffolk Downs. Still, development reversals needn't always be fatal; Quincy Mayor Tom Koch easily survived fallout from the collapse of his downtown redevelopment plans.

In other notable races,  State Sen. Bob Hedlund was elected mayor of Weymouth and Medford now has it's first female mayor Stephanie Burke.

One other quick note from out of state to ponder as we try to make sense of it all: the Ohio referendum to legalize recreational marijuana went down by a large margin.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
