Hackers Steal Thousands Of Dollars From Town Of Marshfield

MARSHFIELD (CBS) -- The town of Marshfield has it's money back. Thirty thousand dollars, to be exact. But for a while, it was a big mystery.

"With advances in technology, there has also been a surge in cyber-crime, this is an example here in Marshfield," says Police Chief Phil Tavares.

Recently, town officials noticed $30-thousand dollars missing from the town's bank account at Rockland Trust.

It didn't take long for investigators to figure out someone had hacked into the account. To the bank's computers, the hackers likely appeared to be authorized town employees.

"It's troubling," says the Town Manager Rocco Longo,"but it's a wake-up call. It was critical to get the money back, which the bank did for us."

With a lot of the cyber-crime originating in Eastern Europe and Asia, investigators actually believe this time the hackers were local.

No one has been arrested.
