Man Arrested After Canton Standoff Dies

CANTON (CBS) - A man arrested after a four hour standoff in Canton early Tuesday morning has died of his injuries.

Officers were called to a home on Washington Street around 2 a.m. for a report of a stabbing.

They found one man with what was described as a "puncture wound" in his chest and a woman who was not hurt.  The wounded man was taken to the hospital and police said his injuries are serious, but not life-threatening.

However, the man's brother, identified as 49-year-old Larry King Jr., barricaded himself in the home.

"He threatened the officers when they first pulled up to the scene," Canton Police Chief Ken Berkowitz told reporters.

State and other local police were called in with a SWAT team to surround the house and negotiate with the man.

Berkowitz said they eventually went into the home around 6 a.m. to get him because he was "in need of medical attention" with serious injuries.  King was taken to a hospital and later died. His injuries are believed to have been self-inflicted.

"There was some kind of dispute (between the two) and it ended in a physical altercation," Berkowitz said.

Washington Street was closed from Dedham to Randolph streets during the standoff.  The area was re-opened to traffic after the man was taken from the house.
