Auburn Police: Child Made Up Story About Razor In Candy Wrapper
AUBURN (CBS) -- After warning parents about a metal item found in a trick-or-treater's Halloween candy, Auburn police are now saying that the story was fabricated.
Earlier on Sunday, police put out a Facebook post urging parents to check their children's Halloween candy because there was a report of an inch-long "metallic object" found inside a miniature Hershey chocolate bar wrapper. Police also shared a photo of the suspicious item in the candy bar wrapping on social media.
The warning from police was shared on Facebook hundreds of time before the child's story fell apart.
"As the investigation into the tampered Halloween candy continued, APD Detectives were able to speak with the 11 year old who originally reported the item in her candy," Auburn police said. "After interviewing her along with her mother, it has been determined that the entire story was a fabrication created by the child."
"It must of scared a lot of kids and parents that they might hurt themselves," eleven year old Keith Roycewicz -- who was not involved in the incident -- said.
Although this was a cruel trick Auburn parents say they always check their kids children's Halloween candy to avoid situations like this.
"I hope that child gets disciplined get some help that's just wrong" parent Kelly Collins told WBZ-TV.
"We dumped out all the candy piece by piece and make sure all was safe," parent James Dorsey said.
In North Reading, police sent out a warning to parents after one house was giving out cough syrup samples to children.
Police there are still urging parents to check over their children's candy.
