Murray: I Don't Want The Patriots To Go Undefeated
Jim Murray from the Felger & Massarotti Show is a die-hard Patriots fan. The thought of the Patriots going undefeated this season gives him great anxiety. Here's what Murray said on Friday afternoon's show about his desire for the Patriots to lose a game between now and the end of the season.
Look, I'm happy they won. It defies logic, the way that they're doing it and carving these teams up. This is the best I've ever seen Tom Brady play. I can now put the 2006 season to rest as my favorite in the history of his career. Even though they didn't win the championship that year, I always loved that 2006 season. It was him and a bunch of stiffs on that offense.
But now, what he's done from last October until now, it's insane -- especially with this offensive line that's being held together with Band-Aids.
So what's the problem?
The pressure of the talk of the unbeaten season in 2007, when it got around to December, I hated it. I was hoping that they would lose a game just so that they wouldn't have that surrounding them going into the playoffs. Yes, it was neat, 16-0. Once it got into the playoffs and they finally got to the Super Bowl, OK! They could go 19-0.
But if you saw that Giants team, they reminded me so much of the 2001 Patriots. Yes, the Giants just squeaked in, but man, that defensive line, the way that they were playing, they were the hot team that you didn't want to get.
I am scarred. I actually am scarred by it.
It's more a referendum of my sad life, but that day, Super Bowl 42, is literally one of the five worst days of my life. I've lost loved ones -- and that's up there, too, those are far worse days -- but that night is in the bottom five.
I was done with sports. After that I was like, I can't do this. That game took years off my life; I know that it did. I'll probably be dead at 62 because of Super Bowl 42.
And if I had to do that again ... and if they lost ... I'll just walk into the ocean and let it take me.
I have friends that root for other teams. In 2007, I avoided phone calls and emails for months. I didn't watch sports. I didn't listen to any sports radio. I didn't listen to anything. I couldn't deal with it. For months. I was like a shell-shocked war veteran.
I know I'm not alone. A friend of mine was at that game in Glendale. That plane coming back? How do you not open the door and just jump out of it?
I don't want it.
Lose a game.
I know that to hear that now, as good as this team is playing, as good as they look, when you look at this schedule -- who are they going to lose to? Probably nobody!
They get to the playoffs, and some other team gets hot ... I don't know. I'll have to watch while I'm biting my arm. I do that anyway with any of the games that I watch. I just don't want that pressure as a fan. And I think they'd be better off just ... expose some flaws. Fix this team. Obviously they have some issues in the secondary and the offensive line. If they happen to lose one of these games, they go 15-1 in the regular season, I'm good with it! I don't need the 16-0. I think people are crazy to be begging for that right now.
