Robi On The Road: Back Bay Stylists Give Homeless Women Salon Treatment

By David Robichaud, WBZ-TV

BOSTON (CBS) – Many would consider it a simple day of beauty. But to a group of homeless women, it's much more.

"To most people they are invisible," the director of a day shelter for homeless women told WBZ-TV.

But for one day each month, a local hair salon opens their doors to the homeless women of Boston and pampers them.

"They made me feel beautiful" one woman said.

The stylists at Green Tangerine in the Back Bay come in on their days off and volunteer their time and skills.

After a morning of getting pampered, the women went to lunch at The Women's Lunch Place, a safe day sanctuary for homeless women in the Back Bay that provides these ladies with nutritious hot meals.

The Executive Director of The Women's Lunch Place said that most of these women have had misfortunes that have resulted in them being on the street.

But when they come to visit, they are treated with dignity and respect.

One homeless woman, in her 30s, said she hadn't had her hair done since she was a teenager.

"Sometimes getting your hair done can change your life," said Louise Rusk, the General Manager at Green Tangerine.
