Former Pepperell Police Officer Charged With Strangulation, Witness Intimidation

PEPPERELL (CBS) -- A former Pepperell police officer is facing multiple charges, including strangulation and witness intimidation after he allegedly used excessive force in early September.

Armando Herrera, 53, of Pepperell, has also been charged with filing a false report by a police officer, according to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.

The incident happened inside the police station, according to a statement released Thursday night. In the statement, Pepperell Police Chief David Scott called it an "isolated incident."

Scott says the department launched an internal investigation, and Herrera was placed on administrative leave until its conclusion. An independent investigator was hired, and shortly after the investigation was completed, Herrera resigned and is no longer an employee of the town, according to the statement.

The police chief says the Middlesex District Attorney's Office was contacted about the incident, and they are continuing to investigate.

Police declined to provide additional details about the incident.

Prosecutors say no date has been set for when he will be arraigned.
