Chuck Pagano Is 'Supremely Confident' In The Colts Against The Patriots And That's Fine

BOSTON (CBS) -- Confidence is essential to achieving success in any profession. But over-confidence can kill your chances.

I can't say I have a problem with Colts head coach Chuck Pagano's comments about the team's upcoming game against the Patriots. According to Pro Football Talk, he was asked about his confidence heading into the game and he gave his current go-to catchphrase: "Supremely confident."

Pagano used the same two words for Andrew Luck's chances of playing Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, and that didn't happen. According to Indy sports anchor Mike Berman, Pagano again said he was "supremely confident" about Luck's availability against the Patriots, albeit in jest. So at least he's self-aware.

What is Pagano supposed to say when asked about his confidence? Of course plenty of people will see this and think "HAHAHA look at this jackass", but a coach should be confident in his team. Even when there's an impending slaughter on the horizon.

Because, yes, make no mistake: even if Luck can lead the Colts offense to score 30+ points, the Patriots will be out for blood. They'll be looking to hang about 600 points on 'em. And there's no reason to believe the Colts defense is equipped to stop the Patriots from getting to at least 40 points this time, either.

Pagano's comments here aren't nearly as bad as his embarrassingly over-the-top postgame speech to the Colts after they came back to beat the lowly Tennessee Titans in Week 3. Imagine the waterworks that will happen if the Colts manage to lose by less than 30. So damn proud!

The Colts are on a three-game winning streak, so obviously they should feel good about how they're playing, especially earning the wins without their starting quarterback. But of course, Pagano's comments are a little much. Just don't go too overboard again, Chuck. Don't want to exacerbate the embarrassment that's going to come to the Lucas Oil Stadium field next Sunday.
