Car Crashes Through Boston Sports Club In Newton

NEWTON (CBS) -- Employees at Boston Sports Clubs in Newton were alerted to a bang when a car suddenly came crashing through the wall making it halfway inside. Cidalia Aguiar, who was in a room next to the crash, saw one of the desks suddenly move.

"I thought it was an earthquake," she tells WBZ-TV.

Police say the 82-year-old female driver was pulling into a handicapped parking space with her husband in the passenger seat when she somehow kept going. Fortunately there was no one inside the room, a former physical therapy office now used for storage. The couple was uninjured.

"They seemed a little like 'okay what just happened here'," said assistant manager Evania Lawton.

"They were both outside the car standing so I said 'okay let's get you inside'," said Lawton.

As hard as the crash was police say it could have been worse if the walls were made of concrete.

"The walls are made of stucco with insulation behind them. Because of that and the way the vehicle went into the building she wasn't injured," said Newton police Lieutenant Bruce Apotheker.

Despite the heavy damage and the chaos, employees say the driver's husband handled it his own way, he still went in for his workout.

"I guess he felt that's what he needed to do," said Lawton. "As long as the emt said it was okay I let him go in." Police say they are still investigating why the driver didn't stop.
