Red Sox Players, Fans Salute Don Orsillo In Final Sign Off

BOSTON (CBS) -- Don Orsillo signed off after 15 years as the Red Sox team announcer on Sunday, but not without sharing emotional thank you's and goodbyes from the NESN broadcast booth.

Orsillo took about a minute and a half after the 8th inning of Sunday's game against Cleveland to acknowledge his partner Jerry Remy, other colleagues, the Red Sox team and fans, and his family.

"Mostly, I want to thank the fans of Red Sox Nation. I thank you for your incredible support, and your loyalty," said Orsillo. "I heard all of you, and never forget your words as they touched me so very deeply.

"Thank you for letting me into your homes, and into your families for the last 15 years. Last Sunday at Fenway will be my greatest memory of my life, I can tell you that right now. Your tribute to me, I will never forget, ever.

"I've been asked many times over the last six weeks how I would like to be remembered, and to be remembered at all is enough for me. Thank you."

After the final out, the entire Red Sox team stepped onto the field and saluted Orsillo at the booth.

"Unbelievably, I wave to the Red Sox for a final time. Thank you, boys," he said, while pointing to the team. "Orsillo rounding third and heading home."

Dave O'Brien will replace Orsillo at NESN. Orsillo signed a deal with the San Diego Padres next season.
