Red Sox Announce John Farrell Will Return As Manager In 2016

BOSTON (CBS) -- John Farrell will return to managing the Red Sox for the 2016 season, the team announced Sunday.

The 53-year-old skipper had been on medical leave since August 14 following a diagnosis of Stage 1 Lymphoma. The Red Sox say Farrell completed chemotherapy treatments in Boston this past week, and will lead the team as long as he's healthy.

Red Sox President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski also announced that interim manager Torey Lovullo will be back as bench coach next year, after signing a two-year contract extension with the team through 2017.

"As the result of signing the extension and his loyalty and commitment to the club and Farrell, Lovullo waived the right to pursue any major league managerial openings in the 2015-16 offseason," the team said.

"It just felt right to be here, to stay here and see this through," Lovullo said. "I have a love for the organization, I have a love for John and a love for the players. If something were to happen, my time is coming if it's meant to be. This felt like the right thing to do, to stay here and see it through."

Other coaches coming back in 2016 include pitching coach Carl Willis, third base coach Brian Butterfield, hitting coach Chili Davis and assistant hitting coach Victor Rodriguez.

The team said it is not renewing contractors for first base coach Arnie Beyeler and strength and conditioning coach Pat Sandora.
