Heavy Rain Could Put Damper On First Big Fall Weekend In New England

BOSTON (CBS) - The heavy rain could put a big damper on the first fall weekend of the season. So for all you apple pickers and fair-goers, here's what to expect.

They're setting up the Topsfield Fair, but the weather is going to make it tough. But it might be OK if you're visiting the fair. Opening day is Friday, rain or shine. "The great thing about the Topsfield Fair is we have a lot of buildings. So even if the weather isn't perfect outside, there's lots of things to do inside. Go see the flowers, go see the animals, go see the giant pumpkin," says Dave Thomson, a representative of the fair.

And anyway, it's New England. It's going to rain. And look on the bright side. "I hear some people tell me a rainy day is the best day to come to the fair because there are fewer people here and they get to see a lot more," Thompson says.

This is also a big time for picking fruit. Apples, peaches and pumpkins, Belkin Lookout Farm in South Natick is blooming. "I'll have 35-38,000 pumpkins this year says general manager John Burns. And he's not worried. The plants love the rain. It actually plumps up the pumpkins. "You-picking in New England is a tradition, and I think they'll come out the following weekend or the following weekend," says Burns.

If you can't be outside, you can always visit Lookout Farm's new hard cider taproom and wait for the next opportunity. "We're going to gear up for Columbus Day weekend and the days following," Burns says.

The Topsfield Fair runs through Oct. 12, so plenty of time to visit. And with weeks to go before the cold weather kicks in (we hope) Lookout Farm will have fresh fruit, ripe for the picking.
