Elderly Driver Strikes State Police Cruiser, Cited For Resisting Arrest
WEST NEWBURY (CBS) -- An elderly Charlestown man has been cited for resisting arrest for driving into a police cruiser after he was pulled over.
Massachusetts State Police said the 83-year-old man was seen driving erratically in a Mercedes-Benz on Route 95 north at 1:45 a.m. He stopped in the breakdown lane in West Newbury following a pursuit.
As a Boxford police officer talked to the man, he then drove his car into the back of an unoccupied Massachusetts State Police cruiser that was parked in front of him, officials said. The cruiser was partially pushed into the right lane, where it was struck by a tractor trailer.
The elderly man drove another 500 yards before driving off the side of the road, according to police.
He was taken to a local hospital, and police aren't releasing his name until his medical condition is assessed. No one else was injured in the incident.
The driver was also cited for negligent operation, failure to stop for police and malicious destruction of property.
