Vigil On Deer Island Honors Bella Bond

DEER ISLAND (CBS) - Steps from where Bella Bond's lifeless body washed ashore, hundreds mourned for a child they never met.

"I just don't understand how people can do this to such a young child. She couldn't have done anything wrong," said Hauyin Kellogg of Winthrop.

"It just want's fair. It wasn't fair. She'll live in our hearts," said Ginny Colangelo of Revere.

House Speaker Robert DeLeo and Governor Charlie Baker attended the vigil organized by Winthrop town officials.

"She was stolen from all of us, but what was also stolen from her was the opportunity to be a kid," said Governor Baker.

Hours after the child's mother, Rachelle Bond, and mother's boyfriend, Michael McCarthy, were arraigned, Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley thanked members of law enforcement before a grateful crowd.

"It's just one of those things that you can't wrap your brain around. It's just so horrible and so bizarre and the more you think about it the worse it is. You just think of what her life was like," said Guy Hillman of Winthrop.

Arrangements for Bella Bond have not been announced. Winthrop leaders have learned the child's great grandmother is buried in Winthrop.
