All Things Travel: Boston To New York Travel Gears Up

BOSTON (CBS) – After a summer lull, travel between Boston and New York is gearing up for a record number of trips.

On a busy day, over 20,000 people will travel between the two cities by air, bus and rail.

Estimates are that 5,000 passengers would use a plane, 6,000 by rail and the largest segment about 10,000 riding a bus. More scheduled trips, wi-fi and advance fares as low as $1 to New York have attracted a younger audience for bus travel from South Station.

Then there is Limoliner, a small Massachusetts company with big ideas, now under new management headed by CEO Mark Richardson.

This upscale bus company is making three round-trips a day for $89 and carrying a couple of hundred passengers in both directions daily.

Limoliner business is up 20 percent this year with 60% leisure travelers and 40% business people. A surprising 55% of riders are female.

The company has invested a couple of million dollars in two new buses for greater comfort in first class seating and a meal on board.

The Limoliner leaves from the Back Bay Hilton and arrives four hours later at the New York Hilton with a stop in Framingham. There is no TSA as there is in airline departures. Hilton package deals, including room, food discounts and a museum admission, are available in both New York and Boston.

Changes are also planned for air and rail travel to New York.

American Airlines is scheduled to take over the U.S. Airways Shuttle at Logan Airport this fall in Terminal B. Amtrak would like to order new train sets with more cars for its Acela service in the Northeast Corridor.

The Amtrak northeast route is the most profitable service in its system. It is possible that track improvements will also take place in the next decade. New York is also going to create a complete makeover of LaGuardia Airport that will be the home of the shuttle flights by American and Delta Air Lines.
