Zolak Rips Chris Mortensen, ESPN, And Roger Goodell

BOSTON (CBS) -- Think Scott Zolak is fired up for the Patriots season opener?

As we now sit less than a week away from the September 10 home opener where the Patriots will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL season opener, Zo is busy at Gillette calling preseason action and recording videos in anticipation of the triumphant return of Tom Brady. It's too bad Zo wasn't on the air for the Sports Hub when the news broke that Tom Brady's suspension was overturned, but he took some time to talk to guest hosts Adam Jones and Mike Flynn - and he had plenty of strong words for some of DeflateGate's biggest wrongdoers.

Starting at the 3:45 mark, Zo called in and tore into NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, condemning his decision not to attend the season opener in Foxboro. While he had a chance to look strong as he faces his enemies head-on, Goodell hides.

"Guy's got no guts. He doesn't want to show his face. He knows what it's going to be like," Zo said on Goodell. "And the fact of the matter is, I don't think he's quite welcome there at all. Not like the invitation would be extended."

What about Chris Mortensen, the embattled veteran ESPN reporter who falsely tweeted that 11 of 12 Patriots footballs were 2 psi under the limit, stood by it as it was proven false, and eventually deleted the tweet but never formally retracted the report? And in the 24 hours since the Brady suspension was overturned, has yet to report or speak on the matter at all?

"What an awful job by ESPN," Zo said. "[Mortensen] has worked at that company for 25 years. He's been doing this in the business for 40 years. And yet, on the biggest day when the biggest story in the league that he covers breaks, he goes radio silent. Terrible. Terrible job by him, and his company."

For Mortensen in New England, the damage has been done. He could have recovered his reputation as a reporter if he simply retracted his original report and actually said something, instead of deleting the tweet and hiding from the public.
