Driver's Selfie Attempt Causes Crash, Maine Police Say

ORIENT, Maine (CBS) – A Maine driver attempting to take a selfie with his friends in a crowded vehicle crashed into a tree on Saturday, according to authorities.

Maine State Police say 29-year-old Jordan Toner, of Hampden, and his seven passengers were driving on Deering Lake Road in Orient when the crash happened.

"Toner leaned over to take a 'selfie' picture with his friends, and ran off the road into a tree," police said in a statement.

Two women sitting in the front passenger seat suffered the worst injuries, and police say neither wore a seatbelt. One woman fractured her nose, while the other was hospitalized for neck and possible back injuries.

Two other men in the car sustained minor injuries. The passengers were all in their 20s and 30s.

Toner is set to appear in court for "failing to maintain control of a motor vehicle due to being distracted."
