BOSTON (CBS) – Two brothers from South Boston are being held without bail after police say they beat and urinated on a homeless man then went on a rampage in their jail cell.
Scott Leader, 38, and his 30-year-old brother Steve were on their way home from a Red Sox game late Tuesday night when they came across the man who was sleeping next to the JFK T station on Columbia Road.READ MORE: Snoop Dogg Pays Tribute To Late Mother Beverly Tate At Boston Concert
“Evidence suggests that after urinating on the 58-year-old victim, who was asleep in a sleeping bag, they punched him multiple times and struck him with a metal pole,” State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said in a statement.
“According to one witness statement, the victim may have slept with the pole nearby for protection.”
The brothers then walked away laughing, officials said.
The man was taken to Boston Medical Center with a broken nose and bruises on his head and torso.
The brothers were arrested and brought to the South Boston Barracks, where State Police say they “became highly aggressive and combative while being booked.”READ MORE: Boston Begins Clearing Tents At 'Mass And Cass' Homeless Encampments
Procopio said the Leaders exposed themselves and urinated in their jail cell, “challenging troopers to come into the cells to fight, banging on the cell door, and making threatening and anti-immigration statements. “
“Scott Leader made a statement referring to the victim as an ‘illegal immigrant’ and stated the reason he and his brother were arrested is that they were white and the victim was a minority (the victim, who is not being identified, is Hispanic),” Procopio said.
Steve Leader also punched and kicked the cell door for “30 minutes continuously,” according to police.
“These allegations are sickening,” Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley said.
Both were arraigned Wednesday in Dorchester District Court on several charges, including assault and battery, open and gross lewdness, indecent exposure and disorderly conduct.MORE NEWS: Concord-Carlisle High School Teacher Accused Of Using Racist Slur Put On Leave
Steve Leader is also charged with malicious destruction of property over $250.
