Keller @ Large: Believe It Or Not, Boston Traffic Actually A Good Sign

BOSTON (CBS) – The weirdest news story of the week came in under the wire last night, word that supporters of former Vice President Al Gore are urging him to consider running for president again, perhaps capitalizing on a groundswell that no one, not even farm animals can sense.

But you know what? If Gore can come in and fix Greater Boston's traffic problems, I'm willing to consider voting for him.

Even though it's peak vacation season and the college invasion hasn't started yet, the traffic around town recently has been as bad as it gets. Too many cars on the road, and too many roads turned into parking lots by construction.

It took us more than an hour to go from Allston to Roslindale the other night, and we didn't go via Nashua.

But it just goes to show there truly is no free lunch.

The exploding numbers of people who can afford to buy and drive cars and trucks is, like it or not, a sign of economic growth. Rising property values force people to do more driving, but they're also a sign of growing wealth.

And if every other artery in Greater Boston seems to be torn up for repair, it's good news that we're finally dealing with our crumbling infrastructure -- unless you're stuck in it.

Just be glad the Olympic Games aren't in town right now.

If the fact that our traffic headaches are a sign of good health doesn't take you to your happy place as you inch along in the heat this weekend, think of last winter instead. That ought to cheer you up.

Maybe even enough to slap an Al Gore for President sticker on the bumper.
