Man Gets Married After ALS Diagnosis On April Fools Day

MAINE (CBS) -- A Newburyport native may have been diagnosed with ALS on April Fools Day of all days, but that didn't stop him from getting married over the weekend in Maine.

The couple, Jenny Serratore and Rob Daigle, got married on Saturday in Maine.

Jenny says her husband was diagnosed with the terrible disease just a couple months after moving to Portsmouth, New Hampshire in January.

"If you don't know what ALS is, it's a death sentence," she said in a YouTube video.

"Your body gradually paralyzes, while your mind stays 100 percent in tact until the very end."

There is no known treatment or cure for ALS.

Despite that fact, Jenny says she still clings to hope.

"I ask that you all join us in raising awareness," she says, "And I ask that you join us in raising money for a cure."

In the video, Robert nominated the Newburyport Alumni Baseball Association, Newburyport baseball team, which he coached last year, and also his brother and two sisters to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

Jenny nominated several friends and family members to take the challenge.

She also nominated celebrities such as actor Kevin Spacey, TV host Ellen Degeneres, and country musician Reba McEntire.

The newlyweds took the challenge by having relatives pour cold water over their heads.

They then jumped into a pool to cap it off.

The couple will be moving to Salisbury, Massachusetts in the next few weeks, so they will have better accessible housing for Rob, Jenny says.
