MENDON (CBS) – Investigators have determined a two-alarm Mendon fire that killed a man and his dog was intentionally set.

State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said that a man and dog were killed Friday when heavy fire broke out at a single-family home on Sandra Circle around 4:45 p.m.

On Saturday, Coan confirmed that the case has been turned over to Worcester County District Attorney Joe Early's office.

"All accidental scenarios have been eliminated, and the fire was intentionally set," Coan told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

The dog was rescued from the burning house. First responders performed CPR, but the pet died a short time later.

Coan could not provide additional details on the cause of the fire because of the ongoing investigation.
