Swampscott Mother Was Beaten To Death, No Bail For Accused Killer
SALEM (CBS/AP) – The man charged with killing a Swampscott mother beat her to death, prosecutors revealed in court Thursday.
Jason Fleury, 37, of East Lynn, pleaded not guilty to murder at his arraignment in Salem Superior Court.
He was ordered held without bail, nine months to the day that 25-year-old Jaimee Mendez was last seen alive by her family and friends.
Her family reported her missing Nov. 8, saying they hadn't seen her since she called a friend Nov. 6 to pick her up.
Her remains were found Jan. 28 on King's Beach in Swampscott.
Fleury told the Daily Item of Lynn in an interview last year he was with Mendez to buy drugs the night she disappeared, but did not kill her.
He was arrested Wednesday in Hampton, Virginia, and agreed to return to Massachusetts to face murder charges.
Mendez's mother says she'll be in court every day looking for answers.
"I don't want the guy dead because that's where my daughter is, I don't want him there. The best thing for him to do is to stay alive 100 years and suffer every day," Michelle Mendez told reporters outside court Thursday.
"He ruined my life also. Her life isn't the only life he took."
Jaimee Mendez left behind a 6-year-old son with autism.
Fleury is due back in court for a pretrial and bail hearing September 21.
