Billerica Police Officer Hit Over Head With Liquor Bottle

BILLERICA (CBS) -- A Billerica police officer was hospitalized Sunday night after authorities say a suspect struck him over the head with a liquor bottle.

The officer was investigating a reported disturbance at a residence on Argonne Road at 10:30 p.m., when police say 25-year-old Daniel Zammuto, of Billerica, ran down the stairs with a glass bottle and struck Sgt. John Harring at least once atop the head.

Harring was knocked unconscious, and another officer on the scene used his Taser to stop Zammuto from hitting Harring again, police said.

Harring was being treated for what was believed to be non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital, police said.

"Officer O'Brien and Sgt. Harring were conducting their duties when a dangerous suspect attacked," Chief Daniel Rosa said in a statement. "I wish to praise both officer for their professionalism and single out Officer O'Brien for stopping the attacker in his tracks. On behalf of the entire community, I wish Sgt. Harring a full and speedy recovery."

Zammuto was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with intent to murder or maim. He was due in Lowell District Court on Monday.
