George HW Bush Not Expected To Require Surgery After Fall

PORTLAND, Maine (CBS) – Former President George HW Bush remains in a Maine hospital after he fell on Wednesday, though he is not likely to require surgery.

A statement by Bush's office released on Wednesday said the country's 41st president is in fair condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland with a fractured C2 vertebrae.

Bush fell Wednesday at his home in Kennebunkport. He never lost consciousness and did not suffer spinal or neurological issues.

Doctors plan to allow the injury to heal on its own without surgery.

Bush will be fitted for a neck brace and continue physical therapy.

No timeline for Bush's release from the hospital has been released, though it is not likely to be a lengthy stay.

At 91 years old, Bush is the oldest living former U.S. president.
