WINTHROP (CBS) – Investigators say they have not yet reached any conclusions and continue to explore leads internationally as they hope to identify the body of a young girl found last month on Deer Island.

The Suffolk District Attorney's office on Tuesday disputed several reports that it says are inaccurate.

Officials said there is no validity to reports that the body was placed on the beach rather than washing ashore.

In addition, investigators said it is not true that they determined the unidentified girl is not from Canada, or that toxicology tests are complete.

"Investigators have not drawn any conclusions as to how the child's remains got to the western shore of Deer Island, they are exploring leads from across the country and even internationally, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has not completed the specialized testing associated with toxicology screens," the District Attorney's office said.

The girl's identity remains a mystery after she was found on Deer Island on June 25.

Police released photographs of the pants she was wearing when found inside a trash bag, and also of a blanket that was with her.

Previously, investigators said they were confident the girl's body was not that of a missing girl from West Virginia. They have also ruled out several other possibilities.

The girl's picture has been viewed more than 50 million times on the Massachusetts State Police Facebook page.
