Adventurer Faces Hurdle In Transatlantic Trek

CHATHAM (CBS) -- Sarah Outen is facing some major challenges after her boat's rudder snapped off in an unexpected storm.

The British adventurer is about 700 miles into her rowing trip from Cape Cod to England.

Outen is in the final leg of her mission to scale the world using rowing boat, kayak, and bike.

"We have been cruising along in totally the wrong direction for the last 24 hours," she said on her phonecast Friday.

Outen created a makeshift rudder but wrote on her blog that she doesn't expect it to last through the heavy currents.

"The weather and currents are boss out here – I just have to make the most of opportunities or reduce collateral," she wrote.

A new rudder is currently being made for her in the United Kingdom and will be delivered to her, she wrote.

Outen took off from Chatham in May. She has about 2,000 more miles to go.
