Amherst Police: Pit Bull Attacks Officer Conducting Security Check

AMHERST, Mass. (AP) — An Amherst police officer conducting a security check was knocked to the ground and bitten by an unleashed pit bull.

It happened Sunday around 7 p.m. as the officer was checking a business. Police say he was approaching an unresponsive homeless woman to check on her well-being when the dog attacked.

Authorities say the dog became aggressive and lunged at other officers who arrived to assist.

The officer was treated at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton for minor leg wounds and was released.

The dog was owned by the woman. Officials say it will remain with animal control for observation and vaccine verification.
