Walsh To Sign $400,000 Lighting Deal To Brighten City Hall

BOSTON (CBS) -- City Hall may soon be getting a face lift of sorts, as Mayor Marty Walsh plans to sign a $400,000 one-time contract to have permanent exterior lighting fixtures installed.

"It's almost like a form of art," Walsh told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Carl Stevens on Friday. "We're looking at putting some lights on the building to change it up a bit."

The contract may be finalized by next week. The installation may begin in August.

The city has already installed Adirondack chairs, which have been a popular addition to the site.

The mayor says he is also considering adding more open green space to City Hall Plaza, as well as museum space inside City Hall.

Walsh told WBZ that the initiative came from lighting up City Hall last year to honor the late Mayor Thomas Menino.

"We got a lot of positive comments on the building," he said. "Both doing the memorial for the man, but also saying 'Wow! It really changed the identity of the building and makes it look architecturally a little different.'"
