Phantom Gourmet: Brewer's Coalition In Newton

NEWTON (CBS) -- If you love beer, this is your kind of place.

"We're pretty serious about beer," owner Bill Honeycutt says.

If you want lots of great food at great price, this is your kind of place.

"We definitely concentrate on value and portion size," Honeycutt says.

And if you think excellent service is still important, this is definitely your kind of place.

"We called our service aggressively friendly and that means we go out of our way to take care of our guests," Honeycutt says.

At Brewer's Coalition in Newtonville, Honeycutt has created a casual neighborhood spot with high ceilings, big windows and a huge wooden bar at the center of it all.

And that bar is all about beer.

"We have 50 craft beers. 20 on tap. 30 in bottles and cans," Honeycutt said. "We have our beers lined up all around the perimeter the restaurant up high and a bunch of cans on the walls. And the main focus of our bar is our 20 draft lines."

And all that beer isn't just behind the bar. Back in the kitchen, it's also an important ingredient of many of the recipes, like the the Beer Battered Fish and Chips and the Black and Tan Onion Rings.

"It gives it a much different taste. A much richer taste," Honeycutt said.

There are also plenty of foods that go great with a beer, like burgers, sandwiches, and Honey Chipotle wings. Plus salads, entrees, and of course, dessert. Basically everything you want in a great neighborhood restaurant.

"Newtonville did not have a neighborhood space when we came to this area," Honeycutt said. I drove by here almost weekly and always look at this location on the corner and said to myself that would be a great neighborhood restaurant, neighborhood bar..and that's what it's turned out to be."
