"The preliminary indication is that he was in the process of lighting a firework that then exploded in his hand," State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

No arrest have been made in the incident.

Consumer fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts. Officials said "a large cache" of fireworks was discovered in the Saugus man's bedroom, and they were secured and detonated by police.

More large fireworks seizures were made in Pembroke, Hyannis and Dennis over the weekend, Coan said.

"They are inherently dangerous," Coan said. "I would ask people to be extremely cautious and not to engage in lighting off consumer fireworks."

Coan said there are several ongoing investigations into incidents across the state where fireworks may have sparked fires.

On Sunday, two boys were injured while playing with fireworks in Boston.
