Gardner's Fire Chief Won't Need Spinal Surgery

GARDNER (CBS) -- Gardner's fire chief, injured while helping out at a house fire in Templeton on Friday, won't need spinal surgery, according to a tweet from his son.

Gardner firefighters were called a single-family house fire on North Main Street around noon. Fire chief Richard Ares was injured after falling 6-to-8 feet to the ground, fire officials say.

Richard Ares suffered a head injury and was taken by MedFlight to UMass Medical Center in Worcester.

Firefighter Jim Ares, the fire chief's son, tweeted on Saturday that his father had compression fractures in his lumbar spine, adding that he was stable and doing well.

On Sunday, Jim Ares tweeted "...He is getting fitted with a back brace and should be discharged within the next 1-2 days. He will be off the job 6-8 months."
