Historic 246-Year-Old Home On Cape Hit By Pickup Truck

COTUIT (CBS) – An historic 246-year-old home on the Cape was heavily damaged in an alleged drunk driving crash early Thursday.

Police said 20-year-old Michael Gregory of Harwich was drunk when he lost control of his pickup truck at the intersection of Routes 28 and 130 in Cotuit and slammed into the Alvan Crocker House.

He was arrested after the crash.

Two people inside the home were not seriously hurt.

Homeowner Anne Barrett and her husband were upstairs when the accident happened.

"A truck came and ran into the house," she says. "We both heard it. It hit the house pretty hard. I thought maybe it was an earthquake, because it was such a real hard bang."

Barrett, who bought the home in 1966 when there was no heat, hot water and minimal electricity, said of the crash: "It's the next thing in the history of this house."

The house was built in 1769 by Alvan Crocker, says Barrett, "Who was the son of the man who originally settled here and the house across the street."

Officials advised the couple to stay somewhere else as a precaution but they declined because nowhere else is home.

This isn't the first time the Barretts have had to restore the home. Just after moving in, a fire broke out and nearly destroyed the house.
