The pet, named Bill, was put in the backyard around 8 a.m., and the family noticed he was missing around noon.

The tortoise is about 40 pounds.

The Taunton Daily Gazette spoke with Bill's family about the disappearance.

"Everyone is devastated," Robin Fielding told the newspaper. "He is a very big part of the family...We had him since he was a baby."

Fielding told the Gazette the 7-year-old African sulcata was put outside by her husband in a fenced-in area on the side of the yard, adding that there is no way for him to escape because there are no holes to sneak through.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Fielding via her Facebook page.
