Boston Police Officer Resigns After Lying To FBI

BOSTON (CBS/AP) -- Boston Police Commissioner William Evans says a Boston officer has resigned after lying to local and federal authorities during a criminal investigation.

As part of a plea agreement filed in Federal Court, 19-year veteran David Fitzgerald turned in his resignation to the commissioner on Thursday, according to the Boston Police Department News website.

The US Attorney's Office will recommend that Fitzgerald be placed on probation for a year.

Fitzgerald was being investigated by the city police Anti-Corruption Unit and the FBI. He has pleaded guilty to a federal charge of lying to the FBI about loaning money to a drug dealer and bookmaker, authorities told the Boston Globe.

The commissioner was disappointed by Fitzgerald's actions.

"I am always troubled when a member of my department is the subject of any criminal investigation. The Boston Police Department has been an active partner with the United States Attorney's Office throughout this entire case," Evans said in a statement.

"The Boston Police fully cooperated with Federal investigators as it is of the utmost importance that any officer who is involved in criminal actively is appropriately investigated and sanctioned for their conduct," he added.

The longtime patrolman for the Roxbury section of the city was initially placed on paid administrative leave on May 21. He is the brother of Boston Police Superintendent Paul Fitzgerald.

It's unclear when Fitzgerald will appear in court.
