Reports: NFLPA Files Formal Complaint Against Patriots For Barring Malcolm Butler From OTAs
BOSTON (CBS) -- Two weeks ago, reports surfaced of the NFLPA investigating the circumstances by which Patriots head coach Bill Belichick banned Malcolm Butler from participating in OTAs.
Now, ESPN and the NFL Network report that the NFLPA has filed a formal complaint -- albeit, without Butler's consent.
Butler was held out of six OTA sessions after showing up late on the first day due to his flight being canceled. Per ESPN, the NFLPA "cited Article 21 of the collective bargaining agreement, alleging the Patriots disciplined a player for missing a voluntary workout, which indicated the workouts were not voluntary, and, as the CBA states, an absence from a voluntary activity cannot result in 'adverse consequences affecting his working conditions.'"
According to The Boston Globe's Ben Volin, Belichick and the Patriots could face fines if they're found in violation.
