Phantom Gourmet: Finest Franks In Greater Boston

BOSTON (CBS) - The Hot Dog Safari returns to Boston this weekend. To get you in the mood, Dan Andelman of the Phantom Gourmet finds some of the region's tastiest franks.

At Kirkland Tap & Trotter in Somerville, James Beard Award-winning chef Tony Maws specializes in hand-crafted, fire-cooked cuisine. But he also makes a heck of a hot dog on Monday nights.

"A good hot dog is one of my favorite food groups," Maws says. "So we set out to make a hot dog, and this is a pretty bomb dog. It's a combination of beef and pork, and we generally serve it on a house-made pretzel roll. Our own mustard that we make; our own relish that we make; our own chips that we make. If you're a hot dog connoisseur, I think it's absolutely worth the detour to come here on a Monday to try that dog."

An old-fashioned bakery in Chelsea, Katz's, is famous for its traditional bagels, pizza bagels, and bagel-wrapped hot dogs.

And if you want a whole lot of hot dogs while supporting a great cause, come to the Phantom Gourmet Hot Dog Safari tomorrow from noon to four, next to Fenway.

Tickets are available at the event, all to benefit The Joey Fund and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
